Hi, I’m trying to identify a plant in my garden. I think it it’s a clematis based on leaves and flowers but the plant dies back to ground level for winter, then regrows new shoots in spring. Does the erect clematis plant do this?
Cheers J
Yes, many of the non-clinging clematis, such as Clematis recta and its hybrids as well as Clematis integrifolia, Clematis heracleiafolia, Clematis texensis, Clematis viorna, and a few others, die back in the fall and begin regrowing in the spring. Clematis recta purpurea is one of my personal favorites!
